MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A 24-year-old man who recently confessed to a 2006 homicide in Minneapolis has been convicted and sentenced, bringing closure to the victim’s mother.
“I’m happy,” said Doris Young, mother of 17-year-old Sterling Horton, who was fatally shot in July 2006. “God made him confess, because he could have walked away from my son’s murder.”
Chief Deputy Hennepin County Attorney David Brown said Tarius Gresham was facing a rape charge from 2012 when he confessed last month to the Horton murder, according to Minnesota Public Radio News (https://bit.ly/1iJkgh7 )
According to the charges, Tarius Gresham admitted to fighting with Horton on the night of July 25, 2006. Gresham told police he pulled out a gun, shot Horton and then ran.
“It’s not unusual to have defendants want to offer information about other crimes,” Brown said. “What’s unusual about this case is that he wanted to offer information that he had committed another crime.”
Before accepting his confession, Brown said authorities verified his claim and determined he was responsible for Horton’s death.
Gresham was sentenced to 15 years in prison Thursday, which includes time for both the Horton murder and the rape conviction.
“I saw the face that killed my son,” Young said. “I saw the young man’s face.”
