CHICAGO (AP) - A family spokeswoman say a 3-year-old girl who died during a fire in a Chicago apartment building was playing with matches or a lighter.

Social worker and family spokeswoman Schona Buranda told the Chicago Sun-Times (https://bit.ly/1cWagxD ) that the girl was playing in a bedroom on Wednesday when a mattress caught fire. She identified the girl as LeAndrea White.

Buranda says the girl’s twin ran to another room to wake up their mother, who then tried to throw the flaming mattress from a fourth-floor window.

But fire officials say that just fueled the flames.

Two adults were taken to a nearby hospital in fair condition. The extent of their injuries weren’t immediately available.

Investigators say there were no working fire detectors in the apartment in the city’s Rogers Park neighborhood.
