WEST GREENWICH, R.I. (AP) - The first Republican to come forward to challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Jack Reed is set to formally announce his candidacy.

Raymond McKay will officially launch his campaign Tuesday at the Coventry-West Greenwich Elks Lodge. He is a network administrator from Warwick who is president of the Rhode Island Republican Assembly. The group’s website says it works to promote conservative ideals within the Republican Party of Rhode Island.

McKay’s LinkedIn page says he works for the city of Warwick. He was not immediately available.

McKay says he’s running because he hears Rhode Islanders express frustration with their leaders in Washington. He says he has new ideas.

Reed is a former Army Ranger who serves on the Armed Services Committee. He has been in the Senate since 1997.
