Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, known as a fighter of traditional family values and Christian principles, said the Republican Party needed to wrap its collective fingers around anti-abortion policy because doing so would prove a clear election winner.
“This is not an issue that we should abandon,” he said, The Hill reported. “I have a moral obligation unto the Declaration of Independence and our constitutional form of government to believe that [that life in the womb] is worth living and a life worth protecting. We can run the full gambit of what we believe, we don’t have to reduce down to one flavor. That’s not how we lose an election. That’s how we win elections, and it’s how we save this republic.”
Mr. Huckabee, a former Baptist preacher who may run a 2016 run at the White House, said establishment Republicans need to wake up and recognize this core principle.
As he stated, The Hill reported: One can still be a “full-spectrum conservative” and deal with other issues, like foreign policy and the domestic budget, without abandoning the fight for fetus life.
“I don’t have to quit being pro-life and pro-family to believe that the government should take less money from each family,” he said, The Hill reported.
