CHICAGO (AP) - Gov. Pat Quinn is getting help from actor Martin Sheen as he makes his push to raise Illinois’ minimum wage.

The two spoke Thursday at a Chicago church, saying raising Illinois $8.25 rate is a moral issue.

Sheen and the Chicago Democrat have met before.

The actor is known for his playing the president on the TV show “The West Wing.” Sheen personally lobbied Quinn to sign legislation abolishing the death penalty in 2011.

Quinn later honored him by proclaiming a Sheen Day.

Sheen says he’s been an actor all his life but activism motivates him.

Quinn has said he wants to raise Illinois’ rate to at least $10. The federal minimum wage is $7.25.

Opponents say the boost would hurt businesses and prompt them to lay off workers.
