A person familiar with the situation says free agent wide receiver Steve Smith traveled to Baltimore on Thursday to visit the Ravens just hours after being released by the Carolina Panthers.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press Thursday because the Ravens do not announce free agent visits.
The 34-year-old Smith, who ranks 19th all-time in the NFL in receptions, was released Thursday by the Panthers after 13 seasons.
The Ravens have been looking for help at wide receiver ever since Anquan Boldin was traded to San Francisco before the 2013 season. Baltimore went 8-8 last year and missed the playoffs, a season after winning the Super Bowl.
Smith caught 64 passes for 746 yards with four touchdowns in 2013, helping Carolina capture the NFC South championship. Smith is Carolina’s all-time leader in receptions (836), yards receiving (12,197) and touchdowns (67).
