PROSECUTORS WANT PENNSYLVANIA SUPREME COURT TO OVERRULE ORDER FOR NEW TRIAL FOR BOY, THEN 11, CHARGED WITH KILLING DAD’S PREGNANT FIANCEE’

The western Pennsylvania boy, Jordan Brown, is now 16. He’s been in juvenile detention since being charged in the 2009 shooting deaths of the woman and her unborn child. But a lower appeals court has overturned the juvenile court judge who initially found him delinquent, a ruling prosecutors have asked the state’s highest court to overturn.

ANOTHER LAWMAKER CHARGED WITH USING ELECTED OFFICE, STATE-PAID STAFF FOR PERSONAL GAIN

Sen. Leanna Washington is the second state lawmaker charged this year, and at least the 15th in the past decade, to be criminally charged. The state attorney general’s office says the Philadelphia Democrat used her elected office for political and personal gain by ordering her taxpayer-paid employees to organize an elaborate, annual “birthday party” political fundraiser.

AUDITOR GENERAL EUGENE DEPASQUALE TO SCRUTINIZE STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENT RESEARCH GRANTS FUNDED BY TOBACCO COMPANY PAYMENTS

DePasquale says the audit will focus on whether five research hospitals that have received nearly $800 million in grants “are getting the best health care outcomes possible with such a large investment.”

WINTER STORM’S LION-LIKE FORECAST PRODUCES A LAMB IN PENNSYLVANIA

The system delivered frigid temperatures to much of Pennsylvania but far less snow than was forecast. The National Weather Service says virtually no snow is expected anywhere in the western part of the state on Thursday, except for flurries that could drop another half inch of snow in Erie and Meadville, in the state’s most northwestern corner.

AN EYE FOR AN EYE

A southwestern Pennsylvania man has been sentenced to death for the beating death of his girlfriend’s 4-year-old son in 2011. A Fayette County jury returned the death sentence on Wednesday for 29-year-old Patrick Haney Jr. of Point Marion. Haney was convicted of first degree murder on Tuesday for killing Trenton St. Clair.
