HOUSTON (AP) - A US Airways jet bound from Florida to Phoenix has safely diverted to Houston after a baby on board became sick.

The Houston Fire Department on Wednesday said medical personnel who happened to be on Flight 678 from Tampa, Fla., responded and cared for the child. The baby was stable when the plane landed Tuesday night at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

A fire department statement did not release the nature of the in-flight medical pediatric emergency or the gender of the child, who was transported to a Houston hospital.

Messages left with US Airways were not immediately returned Wednesday.
