WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - University of Maine running back Zedric Joseph has been arrested in connection with a fatal stabbing in Florida, officials said Wednesday.

Joseph was being held in Richmond County, Ga., on a Palm Beach County warrant, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. Joseph will likely be charged after Palm Beach County detectives retrieve him from the jail in Augusta, Ga. It was unknown if Joseph, 23, had an attorney.

Deputies responded to a stabbing Friday in West Palm Beach, the sheriff’s office said. They found a woman, Vashti Laurore, stabbed through the hand and a man, Ricardy Chery, stabbed several times. The victims, both 23, were taken to a nearby hospital, where Chery died. Laurore was treated and released. Authorities weren’t saying what prompted the attack.

“This is very hard to comprehend,” football coach Jack Cosgrove said in a news release. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the victims and their families and friends connected to this tragedy.”

Joseph was suspended from the school Saturday after officials learned of the stabbing, the university said. The South Florida native is a senior majoring in child development and family relations.

“We were very saddened to learn that a University of Maine student has been arrested in connection with the death of one person and the injury of another in Florida,” said Kenda Scheele, the University of Maine’s assistant vice president and senior associate dean for students. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those whose lives have been forever changed by this horrific incident.”
