CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) - Prosecutors have been granted more time to file charges against a man accused of killing a mother and her two young children in Canon City.

A judge on Wednesday agreed to give prosecutors until March 20 to file charges against Jaacob Vanwinkle.

Fremont County District Attorney Thom LeDoux (La-DOO’) said they want the investigation to advance further before filing charges. One thing they’re still waiting for is preliminary autopsy results.

Vanwinkle was told by a judge at his first appearance hearing on Monday he could be facing charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping and sexual assault.

He’s accused of sexually assaulting the woman’s teenage daughter, who fled their home Sunday night and alerted a neighbor.

The Canon City Daily Record reports (https://bit.ly/1lBnOUx ) Vanwinkle is being represented by public defender Daniel Zettler.
