COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The Ohio Supreme Court won’t hear a former national civil rights leader’s appeal of his conviction involving theft of taxpayer money.

The Rev. Raleigh Trammell’s (trah-MEHL’) was appealing his 2012 conviction in Dayton on charges including grand theft, forgery and tampering with government records. Trammell’s appeal contended among other arguments that there wasn’t evidence to support the charges.

Ohio’s 2nd District Court of Appeals in October upheld Trammell’s conviction and the state Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to take the case.

Trammell’s attorney didn’t immediately return a call Wednesday.

Trammell formerly headed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s Dayton chapter and is a former chairman of the Atlanta-based national SCLC.

The Montgomery County prosecutor opposes early release for Trammell, whose prison term expires in April 2015.
