ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A Bernalillo County jail inmate gave birth to a premature baby that later died at an Albuquerque hospital.

According to jail officials, the inmate was five months into her pregnancy when she began to go into premature labor Tuesday morning and then gave birth in her cell at the Metropolitan Detention Center.

The jail’s medical team attended to the inmate and her newborn during the birth. They were taken to a hospital where the infant died later Tuesday.

According to KOAT-TV (https://bit.ly/1ftP1I8 ), the birth was the jail’s first and MDC Chief Ramon Rustin say he’s pleased by the efforts of the medical staff and other personnel.

The inmate had been getting pre-natal care since she was booked into the jail last week on a probation violation for drugs.
