MANNING, S.C. (AP) - Kaisha Caraway said after her enraged boyfriend beat her and her grandmother with his fists, he went outside and came back into the Clarendon County home with a shotgun.
Caraway testified at Justin Johnson’s murder trial that he pointed the gun at her and said: “You made me do this.”
Caraway, her 9-month-old son Jayden sitting in a highchair nearby, closed her eyes. She heard a shot.
“I didn’t feel anything and realized he had shot Jayden,” Caraway said in testimony reported by The Sumter Item (https://bit.ly/1iA9xFH).
Johnson is on trial this week, charged with murder in the deaths of his son and the baby’s 59-year-old grandmother Maxine Carraway in April 2011 at a home in Manning.
Kaisha Caraway testified that Johnson was angry when she refused to go with him to take their children to the doctor. He was even more upset when the clinic couldn’t see the kids.
Investigators said the grandmother was killed as she tried to run away from the home after Johnson beat her.
After the baby was killed, Kaisha Caraway ran into a bathroom and called 911. Johnson shot through the door and his girlfriend testified she told him police were on their way.
Johnson grabbed his girlfriend and the couple’s 2-year-old daughter and told them to lie to police. He flagged down an officer and told them someone else had killed the people in the home, Kaisha Caraway said.
“Justin asked me if I was going to stick to the story,” she said.
But when an officer got her alone, she wrote on a “he did it” on a piece of paper and Johnson was arrested.
The trial is expected to last all week.
