PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s health insurance marketplace has far surpassed unofficial federal enrollment targets, with nearly 20,000 sign-ups for private plans.

HealthSource RI reports 19,690 individuals signed up for commercial coverage through March 8. A September internal report from the U.S. Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services set a goal of 12,000 in Rhode Island by March 31. That’s when the first open enrollment period ends.

Rhode Island has not publicly released any enrollment targets.

Health officials also reported 48,602 Medicaid sign-ups, far more than expected at this point.

By contrast, small business enrollment so far has been limited. HealthSource RI reported 133 sign-ups through March 8. Small employer sign-ups are rolling, by renewal date.

Director Christine Ferguson says about 1,200 businesses had a January renewal date.
