DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - The president of Drake University in central Iowa has announced plans to retire next year.

Officials for the private school in Des Moines said in a press release Wednesday that David Maxwell will retire in June 2015. He took office as Drake’s 12th president in May 1999.

School officials say the university’s endowment has grown from $80 million to $185 million under Maxwell’s tenure. The school has also increased student enrollment, campus amenities and endowed faculty positions and scholarships.

Drake has more than 3,400 undergraduate students and more than 2,000 graduate students.
