ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A Regent representing the Albany area for the state Education Department has resigned amid the drama surrounding the re-election of the Board of Regents.
Assemblywoman Amy Paulin of Westchester says the plan on Tuesday is to vote on the nomination of Josephine Finn, a village justice for Monticello and former associate professor at Sullivan County Community College, in place of James Jackson, who resigned Monday night.
The Democrat-controlled Assembly typically has the 107 votes needed for a majority to elect Regents members, but due to vacancies in the chamber it only has 99 seats and needs help from the Senate to elect the Regents.
Typically, Regents elections go unnoticed but due to the poor rollout of the Common Core, lawmakers are feeling pressure from parents and educators to bring some new blood to the policymaking board.
