NORTHVALE, N.J. (AP) - A northern New Jersey mayor has resigned his post following his conviction in a scheme where on-duty Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission employees performed personal home improvements and repairs.

The Record (https://bit.ly/1ix9Ntk) reports Paul Bazela stepped down Monday night during an emergency meeting of the Northvale Borough Council. The newspaper says residents and council members gave the tearful Bazela a standing ovation when he was done speaking.

The resignation came just hours after Bazela and another former commission official were found guilty of conspiracy, theft and official misconduct charges.

The 47-year-old Bazela was an operations supervisor for the PVSC. The commission serves more than 1.3 million people, handling the sewage of 48 communities in Essex, Bergen, Passaic and Hudson counties.
