AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine Gov. Paul LePage wants to ask voters whether the state should lower taxes and reduce government spending.
The Republican governor introduced a bill on Tuesday for the state to hold a referendum in June asking voters if they favor lowering income tax rates, implementing alternative taxes and reducing overall tax revenues and government spending by at least $100 million to “make Maine more economically competitive and improve the job creation environment.”
LePage first announced the idea in his State of the State address last month. He says Maine should ask hardworking taxpayers about the state’s taxes.
In a statement, Democratic Sen. Anne Haskell called the proposal “another gimmick” from the governor. She’s questioning what in the budget LePage is proposing to cut to pay for the decrease in taxes.
