Sen. Tim Kaine, Virginia Democrat, said Tuesday that the government is already dealing with climate change by debating issues like flood insurance, which the Senate considered earlier this year.

“We are debating this issue, we are spending money on this issue. We are fixing the problems already,” he said on MSNBC. “We can either spend money to fix the problem once its occurred or we can take preventive steps to prevent the problem from getting worse.”

Mr. Kaine was one of the 30 senators to hold an almost 15-hour overnight talkathon that ended Tuesday morning on the Senate floor to raise awareness about climate change. Most of his constituents, however, already know something needs to be done, he said.

“The science that demonstrates a connection between human activity and climate change is real, we believe it, and we have to do something about it,” he said. “But Virginians are overwhelmingly pro-science.”
