FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A proposed $20.3 billion, two-year state budget closely aligned with the governor’s spending recommendations is headed to the Kentucky House.
The House budget committee approved the plan Tuesday, though several Republicans abstained. Next up is an expected vote by the full House on Wednesday. The budget bill would finance state operations for the two years starting July 1.
The House version maintains Gov. Steve Beshear’s request to increase the main state funding formula for elementary and secondary education. It proposes more funding for textbooks and preschools but at lower amounts than Beshear recommended.
It proposes pay raises for state employees, teachers and other school workers.
It keeps nearly $100 million in spending cuts across a range of agencies to free up money for schools.
