COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - About half of the nearly 56,000 people who have signed up in South Carolina for health insurance under the new health care law supported by President Barack Obama are 45 years old or older.
The Obama administration Tuesday released age and gender breakdowns of the people who have enrolled in government-subsidized private insurance by the end of February.
About 31 percent of South Carolina enrollees are age 55 to 64. Less than one in three are under 35.
The administration reports 58 percent are women and 86 percent received financial help to pay for their plans.
The majority who enrolled in the state didn’t go for the cheapest or the most comprehensive plans. Almost three-quarters opted for the “sliver” plan.
Open enrollment for the insurance runs through March 31.
