GRANDVILLE, Mich. (AP) - Students gathered this weekend to share memories of a Grand Rapids-area hockey player who was found dead on the day of a playoff game.

The Grand Rapids Press reports (https://bit.ly/1gksZ6D ) laughter cut through the tears on Sunday as a stream of friends took the podium in the Grandville High School gym to remember co-captain Ryan Fischer, who died Friday of an enlarged heart.

Grandville High student Sam Daniels says Fischer “was good at making people feel like they belonged.”

Fischer also played varsity football and baseball. The 17-year-old had been expected to enroll at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

A funeral Mass is Wednesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Grandville.

Grandville played Detroit Catholic Central in a hockey semifinal Friday in Plymouth, hours after Fischer died.
