ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina State University is holding a formal inauguration ceremony for President Thomas Elzey more than eight months after he started leading the school.

The inauguration ceremony at 2 p.m. Saturday comes after several days of ceremonies to celebrate the historically black college’s 11th president.

Trustees agreed to hire Elzey in April, and he took over the president’s job in June.

Elzey faced problems almost immediately. South Carolina State University has a deficit of $4 million and has told lawmakers it needs $13 million to pay its bills and loans.

Following Elzey’s inauguration, the university will hold its Founder’s Day program.
