DANVILLE, Calif. (AP) - The son of two Oakland police officers was hospitalized after accidentally shooting himself in the arm at his Danville home.

The San Francisco Chronicle (https://bit.ly/1mLFZex ) reports the 12-year-old boy shot himself at about 4:50 p.m. Tuesday, and was later treated at Children’s Hospital Oakland and released.

A recording of the incident reveals an off-duty Oakland police officer called 911, saying her son had accidentally shot himself and that she had secured the gun.

Danville police Lt. Allan Shields declined to say how the boy obtained the weapon, who owned the gun and whether it was issued by the Oakland police.

Shields says the boy’s father is an Oakland police sergeant. Authorities say the incident is being reviewed by the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office.
