CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - A New Hampshire House committee is going to decide whether to back the District of Columbia’s grassroots effort to win voting rights.
On Tuesday, the State, Federal Relations and Veterans Affairs Committee will consider a House resolution supporting the district’s right to be fully represented in Congress.
The district that includes the nation’s capital has only a nonvoting delegate in the House of Representatives and no senators. Its budget and laws are subject to congressional review.
Advocates acknowledge the resolution in the New Hampshire House is symbolic, but hope it prompts other governments to take up the cause. Because the District of Columbia is not a state, it does not have voting representation in Congress.
The House will vote on the resolution later this month.
