NEW YORK (AP) - Dredging will begin this month to replenish sand on the beaches of New York City’s Rockaway Peninsula.

The beaches are still depleted 16 months after Superstorm Sandy washed the sand away.

The New York Times reports (https://nyti.ms/ONafXp ) that a contractor will start to dredge and spread 2.9 million cubic yards of sand.

The project will elevate the stretch between Beach 19th and Beach 149th streets by as much as 10 to 14 feet above sea level.

The sand will be dredged from the ocean bottom offshore and sprayed on the beaches by a large pipe.

Weeks Marine of Cranford, N.J. will perform the dredging under contract with the Army Corps of Engineers.
