CASPER, Wyo. (AP) - Casper’s city manager has named a new chief of police.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1lruTJW ) city manager John Patterson promoted Sgt. Jim Wetzel to the post Friday, replacing former Chief Chris Walsh, who announced his retirement in November.

The city advertised regionally and then, with the help of Walsh, narrowed the pool of 56 candidates. The finalists then went through a panel interview process, including a community panel.

Patterson says Wetzel’s community connection, leadership and vision made him the best candidate. Wetzel is a Casper native with 15 years at the police department as both a sergeant and a detective.

He also is a lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps with 20 years of service.
