WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware will chair the Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.

The News Journal of Wilmington (https://tinyurl.com/q8srna2) reports that Carper has been tapped for the chairmanship by the full committee chair, Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif. Carper previously chaired the Clean Air and Nuclear Safety Subcommittee.

The transportation panel could play a key role as President Barack Obama proposes $302 billion in transportation upgrades paid for by an overhaul of corporate taxes.

Carper says in a statement that falling gas tax revenues are no longer able to support the demands on the nation’s transportation system. The federal gas tax of 18.4 cents per gallon hasn’t been raised in 20 years.
