President Obama and his acolytes have gone to great lengths to tout the ’”No man left behind” military credo as a basis for trading away five of the most notorious prisoners at Guantanamo Bay for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. This is a rather astonishing rationale, considering that this military principle applies to bringing back injured or fallen soldiers in a combat situation. It certainly was never intended to apply to a soldier who left his unit voluntarily and who at best could be considered AWOL, and at worse a deserter.

Using the ’No man left behind’ principle in this context constitutes a blatant misuse of a time-honored military motto. The principle does not apply to Sgt. Bergdahl, and it certainly doesn’t justify the swap for the five prisoners in question.
