Twenty-five India students on a field trip to Hyderabad were snapping photographs at the banks of the Beas River when a rush of water from the nearby hydropower station smashed into them suddenly and swept them downstream.
Some of the students were able to climb to safety, CBS reported. But many went missing, and police said they’ve already found four bodies.
“We saw a wall of water hit those who were on the banks. They fell flat and disappeared under the waves,” said one student, to The Indian Express newspaper.
Police said Monday that their search operation was being hindered by a lack of boats and divers, CBS reported.
“Officials there are fearing the chances of finding survivors are slim,” said Anurag Sharma, the police director general in the state of Telangan where Hyderabad is located, CBS said.
The students who were swept away were part of a larger group of 48 who were attending the field trip.
