Could First Lady Michelle Obama run for the U.S. Senate?
It’s certainly not unprecedented — look at former secretary of state and senator from New York Hillary Rodham Clinton.
And a new Reuters column points out that Mrs. Obama is diving headlong into a political battle with Republicans over her school lunch program.
“No Illinois Democratic candidate would bring the star power and nationwide fundraising capacity that Obama would” to a 2016 race against GOP Sen. Mark Kirk — who won President Obama’s former Senate seat in 2010.
“She has proven herself a superb speaker on behalf of her pet projects and is now a veteran campaigner for her husband. She’s also remained highly popular — even as the president’s ratings have plummeted.”
She also made an eyebrow-raising slip before catching herself at a fundraiser earlier this week.
“And then there were those of you [who] joined us after the primaries, and you were there when Barack and I first took office — or I took office alongside — or he took office and I was there,” Mrs. Obama said.
Some have speculated before about a possible future in elective politics for Mrs. Obama, but she has consistently said she’s not interested.
