“We can neither confirm nor deny this is our first tweet.”

Well, that is the first tweet for a certain clandestine agency, which earned it more than 81,000 followers within an hour. The CIA has taken to both Twitter and Facebook as of Friday, expanding its social media presence with the launch of official CIA social media accounts on the popular sites, bolstering the CIA’s online presence beyond its public website, mobile site, plus Flickr and YouTube accounts.

Follow the agency on Twitter @CIA, and give them a “like” on Facebook here, where the motto reads, “We are the nation’s first line of defense. We accomplish what others cannot accomplish and go where others cannot go.”

“By expanding to these platforms, CIA will be able to more directly engage with the public and provide information on CIA’s mission, history, and other developments,” says CIA Director John Brennan. “We have important insights to share, and we want to make sure that unclassified information about the Agency is more accessible to the American public that we serve, consistent with our national security mission.”

On the roster of information: the latest CIA news, statements, and career information; updates will also feature artifacts and other information from the CIA’s Museum - “the best museum most people never get to see,” the agency says. Also available: items from the CIA’s “World Factbook,” a public resource, plus unclassified intelligence histories and other information.
