Hackers have likely stolen data from at least some of the 16,000-plus South Koreans who have worked for America’s fighting forces, the U.S. military confirmed Thursday.
“No military or defense-related classified information was compromised because the affected system was a human resources recruiting system [that’s] separate from our military network,” U.S. Forces Korea said in a statement, NBC News reported.
The statement stipulated that the hacking — which came to light on May 28 — was confined to two databases that specifically stored personal information.
The databases are used to store information on the more than 16,000 South Koreans who used to work — or now work — for the United States.
Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti, the commander of U.S. Forces in South Korea, apologized for “any inconvenience and concern,” NBC News reported.
