The NFL is taking a break — from Roman numerals. Super Bowl 50 will be played Feb. 7, 2016, and for the first time since 1971, the Super Bowl logo will be visually represented in standard Arabic numerals, the league confirmed Wednesday.

“When we developed the Super Bowl XL logo, that was the first time we looked at the letter L,” Jaime Weston, the league’s vice president of brand and creative, told ESPN Wednesday. “Up until that point, we had only worked with X’s, V’s and I’s. And, at that moment, that’s when we started to wonder: What will happen when we get to 50?”

Ms. Weston told ESPN that the L simply isn’t very pleasing to the eye. As a result, she has worked on the Super Bowl 50 logo since April 2013 on 73 different versions of the image.

The league has made two logos for the game, the sports network reported. Both the national and regional logo feature the “50” in gold, serving to call attention to the game’s golden anniversary as well as the game’s location in the “Golden State.” The game will take place in Levi’s Stadium, the new home of the San Francisco 49ers.

“We think what we have makes a very powerful statement for the NFL brand,” Ms. Weston added.
