The president of The Club for Growth called on Sen. Thad Cochran to end his re-election bid after no clear winner emerged in his showdown with state Sen. Chris McDaniel in the Mississippi GOP primary.
Chris Chocola, the group’s president, alluded to the latest results from Tuesday’s primary, which showed Mr. Cochran trailed Mr. McDaniel by a 49.6 percent to 48.9 percent margin, as proof that it is time for Mr. Cochran to step aside.
Mr. Cochran and Mr. McDaniel appear to be barreling toward a June 24 run-off after neither of them collected the 50 percent of the vote needed to win the nomination outright.
“Senator Cochran has served honorably, but the rationale for his candidacy ended yesterday,” Mr. Chocola said. “He said he didn’t want to run again, but everyone asked him to. Well, a plurality of Mississippi Republican voters just proved that they don’t want him to.”
The Club for Growth’s super PAC is one of several outside groups that have invested heavily in the race, spending more than $2.6 million on behalf of Mr. McDaniel.
