At least 22 suspected gang members were killed in a bloody shootout with security forces southwest of Mexico City early Monday, the government said.
An Interior Ministry spokesman said the gunfight took place in Tlatlaya, located in the southeast of the State of Mexico, Reuters reported.
The shooting reportedly started after soldiers came under fire from the suspected gang members who were operating a drug laboratory. The gunfight reportedly lasted several minutes.
President Enrique Pena Nieto took office in December 2012 pledging to quell gang violence that has claimed more than 90,000 lives since 2007, Reuters said.
