Two Wisconsin girls, ages 12, were arrested and charged with stabbing one of their friends — another girl, also age 12 — to impress a mythical character named “Slenderman” that they read about on a horror-filled website.

The character is an Internet meme, and it often makes an appearance in horror stories and videos, CNN reported. The court complaint filed against the two preteens — Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier — says they came across “Slenderman” while trolling through the website Creepypasta Wiki, CNN said.

The two girls are accused of luring one of their friends into a wooded section of Milwaukee this past weekend and stabbing her 19 times. They allegedly left her; a bicyclist discovered her stretched out on a sidewalk in the city of Waukesha, Police Chief Russell Jack said, CNN reported.

The victim is reportedly in stable condition.

The two suspects were arrested hours after the stabbing and jailed on preliminary charges of attempted first-degree intentional homicide. They appeared in court on Monday and were given bail of $500,000. Both will be tried as adults, said Waukesha County District Attorney Brad Schimel, CNN reported.

“Both suspects had a fascination with a fictitious character that often posted” to websites that had stories about horror and death, Mr. Jack said, CNN reported.
