Pentagon officials said Tuesday that Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl could be transferred from a hospital in Germany to San Antonio, Texas, as early as Thursday.
The officials said Sgt. Bergdahl, who was released from captivity as a result of a controversial deal reached between the Obama administration and the Taliban in Afghanistan, has been in Germany since Sunday.
He is now going through a three-phase recovery and reintegration process that has him on track to return to the United States within the next few days, according to Army officials.
Sgt. Bergdahl is currently in phase two of process, which lasts a minimum 72 hours, according to Army Lt. Col. Alayne Conway. The time frame set for Sgt. Bergdahl’s rest and relaxation period is closing in, Ms. Conway said, noting that he arrived in Germany on June 1.
Phase three of the recovery effort must take place at a U.S. military base, according to Ms. Conway.
Sgt. Bergdahl was initially captured in Afghanistan but later moved to Pakistan by an Islamic insurgent group. He was returned to the U.S. government on May 31 under a deal that saw the release of five former Taliban commanders from imprisonment at the U.S. Naval Base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
