Lanny Davis, the former counselor to Bill Clinton and close adviser to 2016 hopeful Hillary Clinton, says that he agrees with Republicans that the IRS scandal has gotten out of hand, and that Democrats should feel the same.

“There’s no Democrat that I know of that wouldn’t be asking a Republican administration to conduct an independent investigation” if Republicans were in charge, said Mr. Davis, the New York Post reported Friday.

Mr. Davis also commented on recent reports that IRS official Lois Lerner suggested conducting a tax audit on Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) after receiving an invitation to speak at an event, meant for Mr. Grassley, that included provisions for his wife to attend.

“Looked like they were inappropriately offering to pay for his wife. Perhaps we should refer to Exam?” she said in a Dec. 4, 2012, message sent from her BlackBerry device to several IRS colleagues.

However, paying for his wife to attend the event is not prohibited, a fact that another IRS colleague pointed out in the email chain.

“It was completely almost yucky to read what she wrote,” Mr. Davis said. “If that were known by her superiors, she should have been fired.”
