President Obama deviated a bit from first lady Michelle Obama’s Healthy Eating menu advice as he scooped up stashes of sugary snacks at a Minnesota specialty food shop — just minutes before he stopped at an ice cream parlor for a cold praline-and-cookies treat.

At the Grand Ole Creamery, a dessert chain in the Twin Cities, Mr. Obama ordered a scoop of Black Hills Gold, a caramel-based ice cream treat that includes pralines and cookies, while enticing accompanying members of the media to similarly indulge, The Hill reported.

“Press, you guys want some? On me. No? Is that unethical? I’m trying to soften you up,” he joked, The Hill reported.

Mr. Obama also mentioned that “scooping ice cream” was his first job — telling parlor workers that “one of you might be president” one day, The Hill reported.

Mr. Obama’s stop for ice cream came on the heels of a visit to the Golden Fig, a specialty food store located in the same area. There, Mr. Obama purchased salted caramels, chocolates and apple snack chips, The Hill reported.

“This is the kind of store you want to pop into,” he said, the newspaper reported. “They don’t let me do this stuff anymore. I used to be able to do this stuff.”

The president also added — perhaps thinking of his wife, who has been pushing healthy eating initiatives across the nation and mandating certain foods and calorie limits in school cafeterias — that “these are not all for me, by the way,” The Hill reported.
