HBO’s “Real Time” host Bill Maher took a swipe at former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over her past approval of the Iraq war and subsequent change of heart, calling her recent renouncement of the U.S. involvement in the conflict as hardly believable.

Mrs. Clinton admitted in her just-released “Hard Choices” book that she made a “mistake” in supporting the sending of U.S. troops into Iraq. But Mr. Maher scoffed at that admission in his blog, saying her “hawkish instincts” are still intact.

Citing a New York Times article from April characterizing Mrs. Clinton’s positions while secretary of state as out of step with those of the Obama’s administration, along with her recent comparison of Vladimir Putin to Adolf Hitler, Mr. Maher said: “She’s almost John McCain in drag.”

Still, she remains queen of the Democratic political scene, Mr. Maher said.

“Let’s face it — no Democrat can beat her,” he said. “She could grow a Hitler mustache and still win the Democratic nomination.”
