It seems conservative pundit Ann Coulter is no fan of the World Cup, or of soccer in general, quipping in her column Thursday that, “Any growing interest in soccer can only be a sign of the nation’s moral decay.”
She also took “liberal” soccer moms to task, writing that they “like soccer because it’s a sport in which athletic talent finds so little expression that girls can play with boys. No serious sport is co-ed, even at the kindergarten level.”
Another flaw of soccer, according to Ms. Coulter? “It’s foreign,” she writes, adding, “I promise you: No American whose great-grandfather was born here is watching soccer. One can only hope that, in addition to learning English, these new Americans will drop their soccer fetish with time.”
Some American journalists took issue with Ms. Coulter’s opinions. According to Mediaite, Fox’s Shep Smith, applauding America’s World Cup advancement Thursday, said, “It is a great day in the USA. The U.S. men’s soccer team is heading to the next round of the World Cup, off to the knockout stage, number two in the group, and [then] we’re through [to the next round].”
And then he paused, turned to the camera and said, “I’m told it’s a sign of moral decay,” before shaking his head and adding, “It’s not.”
