The Sudanese mother who had faced a death sentence for refusing to give up her Christian faith has been arrested less than a day after being released from prison.
Meriam Ibrahim was arrested Tuesday with her husband and two children at Khartoum’s airport, the BBC reported. The BBC reported that the family has been taken to the headquarters of one of Sudan’s security agencies.
Ms. Ibrahim’s husband, Daniel Wani, who is an American citizen, had said earlier that the family planned on coming to the United States.
A spokesman for Amnesty International, which had launched a petition for Ms. Ibrahim’s release, said the organization was investigating reports of her arrest.
Ms. Ibrahim, 27, had been imprisoned in Sudan after a court sentenced her to death last month for refusing to renounce her faith. She married Mr. Wani in 2011, and they have an 18-month-old son, Martin. Ms. Ibrahim gave birth to their daughter while behind bars.
Sudan enforces Sharia law, which prohibits Muslim women from marrying non-Muslim men and requires women to follow their father’s religion.
Ms. Ibrahim’s Muslim father left the family when she was very young. She was raised by her Orthodox Christian mother.
Before Tuesday’s arrest, several human rights groups around the world had applauded the decision of Sudan’s government to free the young mother.
