Journalist and television host Joan Lunden returned to her old stomping grounds on “Good Morning America” Monday, where she revealed that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

“I heard those words that every woman fears and never wants to hear: ’You have breast cancer,’” Ms. Lunden, 63, told Robin Roberts on ABC’s “Good Morning America. Ms. Roberts is a breast cancer survivor.

Ms. Lunden went on to say that her cancer had been not detected during a routine mammogram but in a later, follow-up sonogram appointment because she has “dense fibrous tissue.”

She underwent a cone biopsy that revealed her cancer is aggressive. Ms. Lunden will have to undergo surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatment, but she is expected to make a full recovery, ABC reported.

“That’s really the bottom line,” Ms. Lunden said on “Good Morning America.” “That you can’t be afraid of what you might hear, because that’s what can really cause you real problems.”

Ms. Lunden co-hosted “Good Morning America” from 1980 to 1997 and then went on to work as a health advocate. She said that her work and the legacy of her father, a cancer surgeon, are what made her want to come forward and share her diagnosis publicly, ABC reported.
