OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn has released a report on problems he sees with hospitals in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the care provided to military veterans.
The report titled “Friendly Fire: Death, Delay, and Dismay at the VA” was released Tuesday by Coburn’s office following a yearlong investigation.
Coburn blames both the federal agency for mismanagement, and Congress for what he describes as “indifferent oversight.”
The Republican senator’s 124 page report describes criminal activity and sexual harassment by VA employees, billions of dollars in waste and mismanagement and poor oversight by the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee.
The VA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Coburn also noted in the report that the federal government has paid out $845 million for VA medical malpractice since 2001.
