Try as he might, President Obama’s public push to showcase himself as a man of faith just isn’t believable, comedian Bill Maher said Monday during an appearance on Jon Stewart’s “The Daily Show.”

“Obama’s always spouting spiritual [expletive] and I don’t believe it for a second,” Mr. Maher said.

He made the comments while discussing with Mr. Stewart the religious nature of America. Mr. Stewart called the United States the most “God-fearing” of Western nations, which Mr. Maher agreed with, adding that, as “often [is] the case on social issues, we’re a step behind.”

“I mean, Hillary Clinton just said her favorite book was the Bible,” Mr. Maher continued, expressing his doubt about her statement.

“You know who’s a liar about this is Obama. He’s a drop-dead atheist, absolutely,” Mr. Maher said, charging that the president only pretended to join a church to “move ahead in that political world.”

Mr. Maher, a self-professed atheist himself, isn’t the first to make such a statement about Mr. Obama. Noted scientist and avowed atheist Richard Dawkins said during an October appearance on Mr. Maher’s own HBO show “Real Time”: “Like many people, I’m sure that Obama is an atheist.”
