A Sudanese court reportedly has ordered the release of a young Christian mother who had been sentenced to death for not marrying a Muslim man.
Meriam Ibrahim, 27, was ordered to be released from prison by the Court of Cassation on Monday, according to The Associated Press.
Sudan’s official news agency reported that the court canceled Ms. Ibrahim’s death sentence after hearing her attorney’s appeal.
Ms. Ibrahim’s Muslim father left the family when she was very young. She was raised by her Orthodox Christian mother.
Ms. Ibrahim, a Christian, was sentenced to death last month for refusing to give up her faith.
She married Daniel Wani, an American Christian, in 2011, and they have an 18-month-old son, Martin. Ms. Ibrahim gave birth to their daughter while behind bars.
Sudan enforces Sharia law, which prohibits Muslim women from marrying non-Muslim men and requires women to follow their father’s religion.
