What will first lady Michelle Obama do once her husband’s term in the White House ends? While she is anxious to see the U.S. elect a woman president, she won’t be running for office herself, at least according to her comments Monday at the president’s summit on family-friendly work policies.
Mrs. Obama was asked by ABC’s Robin Roberts if she was considering entering the political arena, her response was emphatic.
“No, it will not be political. It definitely will not be. It will be mission-based, service-focused,” she said, according to Reuters, though she did not elaborate further on her plans beyond 2017.
However, her own disinterest in running for office doesn’t mean she wouldn’t like to see a woman in the nation’s top political job. When asked if she’s like to see a female commander in chief, Mrs. Obama responded that she’s like to see a woman president “as soon as possible,” according to multiple news reports.
“You know, I think this country is ready — this country is ready for anyone who can do that job,” she said at the summit, according to The Hill.
“The person who should do the job is the person who is most qualified — and we have some options, don’t we?” Mrs. Obama added, in a possible nod to Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is considering a presidential run in 2016.
