Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Sunday she laughed when she first heard former Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer liken her to a prostitute, but she wasn’t surprised by the outspoken Democrat’s colorful language.
Ms. Feinstein, also a Democrat, said on CNN’s “State of the Union” program that this was just the latest unfortunate thing to come out of Mr. Schweitzer’s “rather large mouth.”
“My first reaction was that I laughed, to tell you the truth,” said Ms. Feinstein of California, who serves as chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. “You know, he’s got a rather large mouth and all sorts of things come out of it. I think that’s really too bad, but that’s the way it is.”
Mr. Schweitzer, who has since apologized for his remarks, used a crass prostitute-nun analogy when discussing Ms. Feinstein’s position on U.S. surveillance and intelligence-gathering, alleging she supported it more strongly than she let on publicly.
“She was the woman who was standing under the streetlight with her dress pulled all the way up over her knees, and now she says, ’I’m a nun,’ when it comes to this spying,’” Mr. Schweitzer said in an interview with National Journal.
During that same interview, he also said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor caused his “gaydar” to go off.
Ms. Feinstein said Mr. Schweitzer has yet to personally apologize.
“It says something, doesn’t it?” she said regarding the lack of an apology.
