New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has endorsed Rep. Charles Rangel for a 23rd term, saying the Democrat is “a critical voice in standing up to tea party extremism.”
Mr. Rangel is running in Tuesday’s Democratic primary against state Sen. Adriano Espaillat and Harlem minister Rev. Michael Walrond Jr.
“Charlie Rangel has fought for the people of his district for over 40 years,” Mr. Cuomo said in a statement, The New York Post reported. “His experience, seniority and steadfast commitment to improving the lives of New Yorkers continue to make him a critical voice in standing up to the Tea Party extremism that is threatening to take over Washington. Charlie has dedicated his life to being a strong, progressive leader consistently delivering for his constituents. Today, I proudly endorse Charlie Rangel for another term in Congress.”
Mr. Rangel has landed endorsements from Democratic Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand as well as former President Bill Clinton. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has stayed mum on the race.
A NY1/Siena College poll released Thursday put Mr. Rangel up 13 points over Mr. Espaillat, the Associated Press reported.
